Trump says Saudi journalist likely dead, warns of 'severe' response

President Donald Trump said on Thursday (Oct 18) he now believes journalist Jamal Khashoggi is dead and warned of "very severe" consequences should Saudi Arabia be proven responsible.
"It certainly looks that way to me. It's very sad," Trump told journalists when asked if he believed that Khashoggi, who disappeared more than two weeks ago, is no longer alive.
Asked about the potential US response to Saudi Arabia, which is accused of murdering the Washington Post columnist and critic of the Saudi regime, Trump said: "It will have to be very severe. It's bad, bad stuff."
This marked a hardening of tone from the Trump administration, which has been reluctant to blame ally Saudi Arabia, despite mounting evidence that Saudi agents killed and dismembered Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul more than two weeks ago.
A former regime insider, Khashoggi had become a critic of powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the point man in ever-tightening military and commercial relations between the Muslim petro-state and the Trump administration.
Just hours earlier Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he had told Trump the Saudis should be given "a few more days to complete" an investigation.
Only then, Pompeo said, "we can make decisions how or if the United States should respond."
In a possible sign of how the Saudis will seek to defuse the diplomatic crisis, The New York Times reported that the country's rulers could come out and blame General Ahmed al-Assiri, a top intelligence official close to the crown prince.
CALL FOR UN PROBE
Four prominent human rights and press freedom groups on Thursday urged Turkey to request a United Nations investigation to prevent a "whitewash" of the alleged crime.

READ: Rights group urge Turkey to request UN probe of Khashoggi case

The Committee to Protect Journalists, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders said such a probe established by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres would finally clear up the affair.
But the United States, the Saudis' most powerful patron, has repeatedly given the Saudi royals the benefit of the doubt, with Trump and top officials stressing that the US-Saudi relationship cannot be put at risk.
Trump has repeatedly praised massive Saudi arms purchases, while Pompeo used much of his brief remarks on Thursday to recall Washington's "long strategic relationship with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
The Saudis "continue to be an important counter-terrorism partner, they have

Cybersecurity facts tax practitioners need to get right

GettyImages-678819951How many emails does your firm receive in one day?
Whatever the number, there’s a good chance a chunk of it is malware. According to a 2018 report compiled by Symantec, Corporation, one in 412 emails contained malware in 2017. For businesses with less than 250 employees, this rate jumped to one in 376 emails. When you consider just how many emails the average office worker receives in a week, things can look a little scary.
Cyberattackers represent a growing and evolving threat to CPA firms. Perpetrators are seeking sensitive client information, financial records and firm data like PTINs using any method available to infiltrate your defenses. And a lot of times, it works.
Understanding how to ward off these attacks is half the battle. Learn how to dispel common misconceptions about cybersecurity so you can be better prepared to face down any threat to your data.
Myth 1. Cybersecurity protocols are guidelines.
A robust cybersecurity plan isn’t optional for your tax practice. You’re legally required to protect your clients’ private information. It doesn’t matter where you live in the country or how many clients you have, your job is to keep would-be cyberthieves at bay.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires all tax preparers to create and enact security plans to protect client data. On top of that, all financial institutions — including CPA firms — must safeguard sensitive data under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley (GLB) Act. Although CPAs are exempt from some aspects of GLB, they must develop a written information security plan that describes how they’re prepared to safeguard client information and how they’ll continue protecting clients’ nonpublic personal information.
Not adhering to these guidelines will get you in hot water. You could lose your business or find your reputation with clients and your peers is damaged. On top of that, you’d be on the financial hook for breaches resulting from improperly secured client data. At an average of $148 per record, that’s quite a bit of cash.
Myth 2. Encrypted email is a safe way to send information to clients.
There’s a reason the IRS doesn’t send transcripts via email.
Your firm can have the very latest cybersecurity software and still spring a leak through email. That’s because to transfer a message from one computer to another, the email must go through multiple servers and sites along the way. And at any point, that message could be intercepted.
No matter whether you employ security certificates or message encryption, your clients are probably not going to such extremes to protect their email communications. Consider using client portals — secure online storage centers — to transmit all sensitive information to clients.
Myth 3. Third-party service providers have protocols in place that protect client data.
In May 2017, Target Corporation was ordered to pay $18.5 million to 47 states and the District of Columbia after a 2013 security breach compromised customer data. Because of the breach, cyberthieves stole the debit and credit card information of more than 40 million customers.
How did hackers gain access to Target’s sensitive customer data? By attacking a third-party vendor and snaking their way into the company’s servers. It’s the same way hackers can infiltrate your firm’s client data if you don’t fully vet your vendors. Here’s how:

CVC shares report on 100 bank frauds with govt, RBI

Gaurav Choudhury
Moneycontrol News
Inflated valuation of goods, fudged bills, shell companies for diversion of funds are the common threads that run through India’s top 100 banking frauds analysed by the Central Vigilance Commission.
The country’s top anti-corruption watchdog has indicted the public-sector banks, already reeling under a mountain of Rs 10 lakh crore of unpaid debts, for failing to check the credentials of loan-seekers and relying too much on the third party to do the job.
The report, a copy of which is with moneycontrol.com, was submitted on October 15 and has suggestions for the Reserve Bank of India for improved checks and balances.
The report does not name any company or individual but has details of investigations into sectors ranging from gems and jewellery, aviation, media, pharma and agriculture.
SectorCos/people investigated

The report details how lenders were cheated, lapses on part of the banks and suggestions to plug them.
For instance, in its report on three gems and jewellery firms, the CVC found that the companies inflated the value of diamonds to avail higher credit.

Good news! IT officer can’t take away your tax refund and adjust against outstanding demand without notice

Shocker for Indian Builders will have to pay Income Tax on unsold inventory

properties-et
There are two parts to the recent changes in tax laws related to unsold inventories: first, which lie unoccupied; second which are leased out.
Builders across the country are in for a rude shock. They could be soon saddled with a tax burden that few, or probably none, of them have accounted for.
Developers, according to changes in the law that have gone unnoticed so far, will have to pay tax on the entire fair value -- based on the ready reckoner rates -- of all properties they lease out in 2018-19 and later. If a builder, for instance, leases out unsold properties having a combined fair market value

New Delhi: In order to ensure compliance of Goods and Services Tax (GST) provisions, the Delhi government on Friday launched an extensive drive against tax and return defaulters with an aim to increase revenue for the national capital. The move by the Department of Trade and Taxes is aimed at checking tax evasion and bridge the revenue gap. "A detailed strategy has been chalked out by the department and numerous instructions like identifying dealers carrying out business without registration and rigorous follow-up of notices to non-filers of return have been issued to GST officers of the state tax department," VAT Commissioner H. Rajesh Prasad said giving details of the drive. Other instructions, Prasad said, include identification and action against tax payers claiming excessive Input Tax Credit (ITC) in GSTR-3B filed as compared to GSTR-2A, action against tax payers showing lesser output tax liability in GSTR-3B filed as compared to GSTR-1, scrutiny of Input Tax Credit (ITC) claimed by the tax payers in TRAN-1 form and action on the tax payers claiming excessive ITC. The drive will also include physical verification of at least 10 per cent of new tax payers to curb issuance of bogus invoices, physical verification of old or migrated tax payers in suspicious cases, creating mobile squads to check the system of e-way bill and invoices during the movement of goods within Delhi, and verification of the returns filed by work contractors in Delhi. A statement by the Delhi government said that show-cause notices have also been issued to 51,500 tax defaulters. "As of now, notices have been issued to the 51,500 tax payers who have not filed GSTR-3B returns for the tax periods concerned," the statement said. Besides, it said, 135 notices have been issued in respect of excessive claim of ITC in GSTR-3B by the tax payers, and 837 notices have been issued for showing lesser output tax liability in GSTR-3B returns by the tax payers as compared to GSTR-1.
